WD: Formula Symbols Display and Print Incorrectly

SUMMARY

In Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, it is possible that some arguments of mathematical symbols created using the typesetting formulas (COMMAND+OPTION+\) will display and print incorrectly. This problem can be seen when the TrueType version of the Symbol font is installed.

This problem is most apparent when creating Summation or Product Integrals that include both upper and lower limits. Such a formula may display and print with both limits overlapping the integral symbol. Upon removing the TrueType version of the Symbol font, the limits should display and print above and below the integral as expected.

Formulas created in Word using typesetting commands utilize the Symbol font to generate most of the special mathematical characters. In some cases, the TrueType version of the Symbol font does not allow for proper spacing between characters and can cause them to overlap. Removing the TrueType Symbol font from the System suitcase solves this problem.

To remove the TrueType font, do the following:

System 7.0

1. Quit all applications.

2. Open the System Folder.

3. Open the System suitcase.

4. Move the Symbol TrueType font out of the System. The TrueType font can be identified by these differences: - The ICON will have three A's on a plain document ICON. - The font name will not include a size number.

5. Close the System.

System 6.0.x

1. Quit all applications.

2. Open Font/DA Mover.

3. Open the System to list the currently installed fonts.

4. Remove the Symbol TrueType font from the System. - The TrueType version will not include a size number.

5. Choose Quit to exit the Font/DA Mover.
