WD: Hairline Borders Print as 1-Point Border

Last reviewed: February 5, 1998
Article ID: Q84030

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for the Macintosh versions 5.0, 5.1, 6.0, 6.0.1

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, if a table or paragraph with hairline borders is copied as a picture (COMMAND+OPTION+D) or linked as a picture via the Paste Special command, hairline borders may become 1-point lines. In addition, graphics containing hairline borders pasted into Word from other applications may have the same results.

CAUSE

This problem is caused by a limitation of QuickDraw, the drawing module in the Macintosh System software. QuickDraw does not support hairline borders. Copying as a picture from Word or paste linking as a picture converts the selected information to a bitmapped image that is limited to the capabilities of QuickDraw.

WORKAROUND

There is no workaround for maintaining hairline borders in graphics pasted from other applications. However, there is a method for paste linking paragraphs or tables in Word that contain hairline borders.

To link information in Word 5.0 and maintain hairline borders, do the following:

  1. Select the paragraph or table to link.

  2. From the Edit menu, choose Copy.

  3. Place the insertion point in the location to paste link.

  4. From the Edit menu, choose Paste Special.

  5. Select the "Formatted Text (RTF)" option.

  6. Click the Paste Link button.

Hairline borders are preserved in the RTF (rich-text format) file format.
