WD: How to Change Resume Wizard (RESUME.WIZ) Document Formatting

ID: Q119858

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

The Resume Wizard (RESUME.WIZ) supplied with Word for Windows does not provide character formatting options (for example, you cannot change the font or point size).

WORKAROUND

To modify the character formatting cover letter, resume, or resume envelope you can create with the Resume Wizard, use the methods below to modify the styles in the Resume Style templates (RESUME1.DOT, RESUME2.DOT, RESUME4.DOT, LETTER1.DOT, LETTER2.DOT, and LETTER3.DOT).

NOTE: Microsoft does not support the modification of its wizards or templates. Modifications done by the user are at the user's risk and constitute no obligations or warranties, either written or expressed, by Microsoft.

WORKAROUND

This workaround consists of three separate procedures you can use to modify the resume, cover letter, and resume envelope, respectively. Before you modify your Resume Wizard or any of its style templates, make backup copies of the following files, which are located in the following subdirectories:

Word 7.0 Name and Location

   \Templates\Other Documents\Professional Resume
   \Templates\Other Documents\Contemporary Resume
   \Templates\Other Documents\Elegant Resume

   \Templates\Letters & Faxes\Professional Letter
   \Templates\Letters & Faxes\Contemporary Letter
   \Templates\Letters & Faxes\Elegant Letter

Word 6.0 Name and Location

   \TEMPLATE\RESUME1.DOT
   \TEMPLATE\RESUME2.DOT
   \TEMPLATE\RESUME4.DOT

   \TEMPLATE\LETTER1.DOT
   \TEMPLATE\LETTER2.DOT
   \TEMPLATE\LETTER3.DOT

If something goes wrong while you modify your Resume Wizard or one of its templates, you can restore the backup copies.

Modifying the Resume Text Styles

 1. Run the Resume Wizard and select the style and settings you want to
use. After the wizard finishes, note the style name of the text you
want to reformat. For example, if you want to change the font style of
the institution name, note the Institution style. Once you have noted
the names of all the styles you want to change, continue with step 2.

 2. Open the template that corresponds to the style of resume you
    created in step 1 above:

       Resume Style Resume Style Template
       ------------ ---------------------

       Classic RESUME1.DOT
       Contemporary RESUME2.DOT
       Elegant RESUME4.DOT

 3. From the Format menu, choose Style.

 4. From the List box, select All Styles.

 5. From the Styles list, select the first style you want to change and
    choose the Modify button.

 6. In the Modify Style dialog box, select the Add To Template option so an
X appears in its check box.

 7. Choose the Format button. From the menu that appears, choose
characteristic you want to modify. For example, to change the font,
choose Font; or to change the line spacing, choose Paragraph.

 8. Repeat step 7 as necessary until you are finished reformatting the
style, and then choose OK in the Modify Style dialog box.

 9. In the Format Style dialog box, choose the Close button.

10. Repeat steps 3 through 9 until you have modified the formatting in all
the styles you want to change.

11. From the File menu, choose Close. Choose Yes when Word prompts you to
save the changes to your template.

Next time you use the Resume Wizard to create a resume, the wizard will use your modified styles.

Modifying the Resume Cover Letter Text Styles

 1. Run the Resume Wizard to create the type of cover letter you want to
use. After the wizard finishes, note the style name of the text you
want to reformat. For example, if you want to change the font for the
body of the letter, note the Body Text style. Once you have noted the
names of all the styles you want to change, continue with step 2.

 2. Open the template that corresponds to the style of letter you created
    in step 1 above:

       Letter Style Letter Style Template
       ------------ ---------------------

       Classic LETTER1.DOT
       Contemporary LETTER2.DOT
       Typewriter LETTER3.DOT

    choose the Modify button.

Next time you use the Resume Wizard to create a cover letter, the wizard will use your modified styles.

Modifying the Resume Envelope Text Style

 1. Create a new Word document based on the Normal template by choosing the
New button on the Standard toolbar.

 2. From the Format menu, choose Style.

 3. In the List box, select All Styles.

 4. From the Styles list, select EnvelopeReturn if you want to modify the
return address, and select EnvelopeAddress if you want to modify the
    formatting of the addressee block.

 5. Choose the Modify button.

 6. In the Modify Style dialog box, select the Add To Template option so an
X appears in its check box.

 7. Choose the Format button. From the menu that appears, choose the
characteristic you want to modify. For example, to change the font
size, choose Font; or to change the line spacing, choose Paragraph.
Modify the style formatting, and then choose OK.

Next time you use the Resume Wizard to create a resume envelope, the wizard will use your modified EnvelopeReturn and EnvelopeAddress styles.
