The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows 95, versions 7.0, 7.0a
  • Microsoft Word 97 for Windows

SUMMARY

When you insert a Microsoft Equation object, Equation opens with in- place editing. This article describes how to use the RegOptions macro supplied with Word to make Equation open in a separate window.

MORE INFORMATION

Use the RegOptions macro to change the Windows Registry settings that control this behavior:

Word 97

  1. On the Tools menu, click Templates and Add-ins. Click Add and then change to the Macros folder (for example, C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Macros.)

  2. Select the Support8.dot file and click OK. This adds the Support8 template to the "Global Templates and Add-ins" box. Click OK.

  3. On the Tools menu, select Macro, and then click Macros. In the "Macros Available In List," select Support8.dot (global template).

  4. From the Macro Name list, select RegOptions, and then click Run.

A Set Registry Options window will appear.

  5. Select the "Equation Editor Options" tab.

  6. Under Option, select ForceOpen and then under Setting, type "a 1" (without the quotation marks). Click OK.

  7. Quit and restart Word. The next time you insert an Equation object, it will open in its own window, instead of opening in-place.

Word 7.0

  1. On the File menu, click Templates. Click Add, and then change the folder to the Winword\Macros subfolder (for example, C:\MSOffice\Winword\Macros).

  2. Select the Macros7.dot file and click OK.'

This adds the Macros7 template to the "Global Templates and Add-ins" box. Click OK.

  3. On the Tools menu, click Macro. Then, in the Macros Available In list, click Macros7.dot (Global Template). Click OK twice.

  4. The Run Sample Macros button appears. Click this button.

  5. Click the down arrow and select RegOptions from the list. Click OK.

  6. In the Section box, select Equation Editor Options.

  7. In the Option box, select ForceOpen.

  8. In the Setting box, erase Using Defaults, and type "1" (without the quotation marks). Click Change and then click OK.

A message appears, stating "In order for some Word-related Registry settings changes to take effect, it may be necessary to exit then restart Word," but it is not necessary to restart Word. The next time you insert an Equation object in any program, the object will be opened in its own window, instead of opening in-place.
