ID: Q176121

The information in this article applies to:

SUMMARY

When the Background Repagination option is turned on, Word paginates the document when the program is idle. This allows the page numbers on the status bar to remain current. Word will insert dotted lines to represent page breaks.

In some cases, the Background Repagination option can slow other operations. If this is a problem, you need to turn off Background Repagination.

MORE INFORMATION

The Background Repagination option is not available (you cannot turn it off) when you are in print preview, page layout, or online layout views or when you print the document.

When you are in normal, outline, or master document views, you can turn Background Repagination on or off in Word by doing the following:

1. On the View menu, click Normal.

2. On the Tools menu, click Options (Windows) or Preferences (Word 98

   Macintosh Edition).

3. Select the General tab.

4. Select or clear the Background Repagination check box.

5. Click OK.
