WD: Multilevel/Heading Numbering Text Applied to All Levels

ID: Q176712

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

When you modify a multilevel or heading numbering scheme, the "Text Before" and "Text After" is applied to the current and all lower numbering levels.

NOTE: This problem occurs when the "Include from Previous Level" option is set to either "Numbers" or "Numbers and Position."

WORKAROUND

Do not use either Multilevel or Heading Numbering in your document. Instead, type your text and insert either an AUTONUMLGL or AUTONUMOUT field where you want a number to appear.

To correctly use either the AUTONUMLGL or AUTONUMOUT fields, your text must be formatted with a heading style.

When you use AUTONUMLGL fields, the numbers applied will be Arabic. For example, your numbers will be 1, 2, 3, and so on.

When you use AUTONUMOUT fields, the numbers applied will be in roman numerals. For example, your numbers will be I, II, III, and so on.

To create the following numbering scheme, type the text and apply the appropriate heading style, and then insert the AUTONUMLGL field where you want a number to appear.

   Chapter 1. Mercury

Section 1.1. Temperatures on the surface

Section 1.2. Distances to the Sun & planets

                1.2.1 Sun
The distance to the Sun is

                1.2.2 Venus
                           The distance to Venus is

The following shows the style applied to each line of text typed, along with the AUTONUMLGL field inserted where the number is to appear. You will will see the {AUTONUMLGL} field when you toggle field codes in your document.
