WD: Purpose of Square Bullets Displayed in Left Margin

SUMMARY

Nonprinting square bullets are displayed in the left margin area of a document when you view the document in page layout or in normal view.

These squares indicate that one or more of the following paragraph formattings is applied to the text:

   - Keep Lines Together
   - Keep With Next
   - Page Break Before
   - Suppress Line Numbers

Square bullets also appear in the left margin area where a frame has been inserted. These bullets appear in normal view only.

You can see the square nonprinting bullets in either normal or page layout view. To see the squares, use one of the following procedures:

1. On the Tools menu, click Options. (In Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh
   Edition, click Preferences.)

2. Under Nonprinting Characters, click Paragraph Marks.

3. Click OK.
