SUMMARY

This article discusses how to specify levels when you number paragraphs.

MORE INFORMATION

Word 6.0

There are three ways to specify levels when renumbering paragraphs in Microsoft Word. If the paragraphs are assigned the "heading" styles, heading 1 will be numbered as level one, heading 2 as level two, and so on. To number the paragraphs using this method, use Heading Numbering on the Format menu.

Levels can be specified using the paragraph indents or tabs for each level. To number the paragraphs, use Bullets and Numbering on the Format menu and click the Multilevel tab.

WORD 4.0 and 5.x

There are two ways to specify levels when renumbering paragraphs in Microsoft Word. If the paragraphs are assigned the "heading" styles, heading 1 will be numbered as level one, heading 2 as level two, and so on, as in the following example.

(Typing the levels in outline view automatically assigns the heading styles.)

NOTE: In Word versions 3.x, the outline styles are named "level" rather than "heading".

   1. This line has the style heading 1
1.1 This line has the style heading 2
1.2 This line has the style heading 2

   2. This line has the style heading 1
2.1 This line has the style heading 2

Alternatively, levels can be specified using the paragraph indents for each level.

For example:

   1. This line has a left indent at 0
1.1 This line has a left indent at .5
1.2 This line has a left indent at .5

   2. This line has a left indent at 0
2.1 This line has a left indent at .5

NOTE: A common mistake is to use the TAB key to indent lines. If this method is used, the Renumber command will not work as expected.
