The information in this article applies to:

SUMMARY

Word Version 6.x

In Word 6.x for the Macintosh, use the following steps to reset the spelling checker for previously ignored words:

1. On the Tools menu, click Options.

2. Select the Spelling tab.

3. Click Reset Ignore All.

4. A dialog box warns you that this operation will delete the current list

of ignored words. Click Yes to continue. Click OK.

Word Versions 5.0 and 5.1

In Word 5.x for the Macintosh, the spelling checker has an Ignore option and an Ignore All option. "Ignore" ignores the currently flagged instance of the word, whereas "Ignore All" ignores all instances of the currently flagged word in the rest of the document.

To reset the spelling checker so that it will forget the words that were skipped, click Cancel in the Spelling dialog box. To make the spelling checker remember ignored words, click the current document to edit the document rather than canceling the spelling checker. This keeps the Spelling window open but moves it behind other windows.

Word Versions 3.0x and 4.0

In Word 3.x and 4.0 for the Macintosh, when you are checking the spelling of a document, if a word is flagged as misspelled and you accidentally choose the No Change button, Word remembers that the word was skipped and does not flag the same word as misspelled again.

To reset the spelling check so that it will forget the words that were skipped, do the following:

1. If the Spelling dialog box is open, click Cancel.

2. Hold down the SHIFT key.

3. On the Utilities menu, click Reset Spelling.

Resetting the spelling checker does not affect the words that have been added to the User 1 dictionary.
