WD: Spelling Checker Incorrectly Replaces with Uppercase Letters

SYMPTOMS

When spell checking a document, a word is flagged as misspelled in your document, and the text in the Change To box is in uppercase.

CAUSE

This can occur if the flagged word, in uppercase, was flagged earlier in the spell check, and was replaced with text you entered in the Change To box.

For example, "MSFT" is flagged during a spell check as misspelled. In Change To, you enter "Microsoft" and click Change. Later in the document, "MSFT" is flagged again. Change To displays "MICROSOFT" instead of the originally entered "Microsoft".

The text must be retyped in the Change To box in its original format.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition.
