The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c
  • Microsoft Word for Windows 95, versions 7.0, 7.0a
  • Microsoft Word 97 for Windows
  • Microsoft Word for Windows NT, version 6.0
  • Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, versions 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.1a
  • Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition

SYMPTOMS

When you set the height of a table row to At Least or Exactly, or when you drag the bottom of a table row such that it exceeds the allowable page size, Word truncates the bottom of the row.

This problem occurs when either of the following conditions is true:

  • The height of the row is larger than the height of a page.

        -or-

  • (Word 97 only) In online layout view, the height of the row is larger than the height of the window.

The table row will flow off the bottom of the page and will not continue (break) to the next page.

CAUSE

You can't force the height of a table row to be larger than the actual page height of the document.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use any of the following methods to change the height of the table row to fit on the page.

Method 1: Use the Mouse

Use the mouse to drag the bottom edge of the table row.

NOTE: You can resize the table row using your mouse when you are in either page layout or online layout views only. You can't drag a table row larger when you are in normal, outline, or master document view.

Method 2: Set the Row Height Option

  1. Select the table row you want to make taller.

  2. On the Table menu, click "Cell Height and Width."

  3. Change "Height of Row <n>" to the height you want, and then click OK.

STATUS

This functionality is by design. You can't resize the row height of a table to be larger than the document's actual page height.

MORE INFORMATION

Microsoft Word allows a table row to expand and break across a page break, or to be larger than the height of a page, when there is sufficient text to force the table row to continue (break) to the next page.

When you adjust the height of a table row to be a set height, Word sets the "Height of row <n>" to either "At Least" or "Exactly." Word also sets the height of a table row based on the size of the font when the Row tab is set to "Auto."
