WD6: MacWord Print Job Disappears with QuickDraw GX Running

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, version 6.0

SYMPTOMS

If you have QuickDraw GX installed on your Apple Macintosh, your document may not print from Word for the Macintosh. You may be able to print from the Finder or Simple Text, but not from Word.

The print job seems to disappear because it does not show up in the print queue.

CAUSE

You may be using one or more PostScript Type 1 fonts in your document that has not been converted to GX fonts on your system. Unconverted PostScript Type 1 fonts do not print from Word 6.0 when QuickDraw GX is running.

You might have PostScript Type 1 fonts on your system if you install Adobe Illustrator (which installs PostScript Type 1 fonts) after you install QuickDraw GX. In this case, the Adobe Illustrator PostScript Type 1 fonts do not get converted to PostScript Type 1 GX fonts.

RESOLUTION

Troubleshooting

To determine whether you cannot print due to the problem described in the "Cause" section of this article, reformat your document for a bitmapped font, such as New York, Geneva, or Chicago, and then try to print the document from Word. If you can print the reformatted docuent, you probably have unconverted PostScript Type 1 fonts on your system. Use the following instructions in to resolve this problem.

Workaround

Convert your PostScript Type 1 fonts to PostScript Type 1 GX fonts using the Type 1 Enabler utility, supplied with QuickDraw GX. The Type 1 Enabler utility is not installed if you use the Easy installation instructions. To install the Type 1 Enabler, select the Custom installation instuctions and choose QuickDraw Utilities to select the Type 1 Enabler.

TIP: As a quick, temporary workaround to obtain a printout of the currentdocument, follow these steps:

  1. Save the document.

  2. Reformat the document for a bitmapped font such as New York, Geneva, or Chicago.

  3. Print the document.

  4. Close the document without saving the font formatting changes.

The QuickDraw GX and Adobe Illustrator products included here are manufactured by vendors independent of Microsoft; we make no warranty, implied or otherwise, regarding these products' performance or reliability.
