WD6X: Cannot Select or Copy from Find File Preview Window on Mac

Last reviewed: February 5, 1998
Article ID: Q118903
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, version 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.1a

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Word 6.x for the Macintosh, you cannot select or copy text from the Preview window of the Find File command. (To locate the Preview window, click Find File on the File menu.) This behavior is a change from Word, versions 5.0 and 5.1, which allow you to select and copy text in the Find File View window.

CAUSE

The Preview window in Word for the Macintosh is a Rich Text Edit (RTE) control. RTE controls can support full editing or no editing, but not partial editing. This behavior is by design of Microsoft Word.

MORE INFORMATION

The Find File Preview Of window displays the contents of selected documents in the Listed Files box. To preview a file that meets the current search criteria, click the file you want in the Listed Files list and select Preview in the View list. The contents of the file are displayed in the Preview Of box on the right. If the selected file is not in Word format, Word 6.0 converts the file and displays it, provided the appropriate converter is installed.
