WD6X: Custom Dictionaries Path Does Not Display Completely

ID: Q106468

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

Some long paths do not display completely in the Custom Dictionaries list of the Spelling options tab. (To locate the Custom Dictionaries list, click Options on the Tools menu and then click the Spelling tab.)

CAUSE

The Custom Dictionaries list displays only 30 characters. You cannot scroll these list items, and Word does not truncate the path to display the filename of the custom dictionary.

WORKAROUND

To view the entire path for a custom dictionary, open the Advanced Settings dialog box by running the ToolsAdvancedSettings macro command and then select MS Proofing Tools (WIN.INI) in the Categories list. Use the appropriate method for your version of Word to open the Advanced Settings dialog box.

Word for Windows

1. On the Tools menu, click Macro.

2. In the Macros Available In list, select Word Commands. In the

Macro Name list, select ToolsAdvancedSettings and then click Run.

3. In the Advanced Settings dialog box, select MS Proofing Tools
   (WIN.INI) from the Categories list.

4. Select the custom dictionary you want to display.

NOTE: Word lists the custom dictionaries as "Cust Dict 1,"
"Cust Dict 2," and so on.

5. Word displays the custom dictionary path in the Setting box. You
can scroll through the text in this box to view any undisplayed portion
   of the path.

NOTE: You can add the ToolsAdvancedSettings command to your Tools menu for easy access. For online instructions, double-click the Help button on the Standard toolbar. Then type "customize" (without the quotation marks).

Word for the Macintosh

1. On the Tools menu, click Options.

2. Click the Spelling tab.

3. Select the Custom dictionary.

4. Click Edit, and then click Yes.

5. Click OK to close the Options dialog box.

6. On the File menu, click Save as.

7. Click Save, and then click Replace.
