WD6X: Index Entries Converted Incorrectly from MacWord 5.x

• Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, versions 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.1a

SYMPTOMS

When a Word 5.x for the Macintosh document containing index entries (like the examples formatted below) is converted to Microsoft Word 6.x for the Macintosh, the text may not convert correctly. Some of the text in the index entry may be deleted when converted.

For example, if you insert the following index entries in a Word 5.x document

         .i.PERCENT: POWER (.name.) XX.X<tab><tab>;
         i.POWER (.name.) FUNCTION<tab><tab>;

         .name.) XX.X<tab><tab>;{ XE  "PERCENT: POWER
         (.name.) XX.X<tab><tab>" }
         .name.) FUNCTION<tab><tab>; { XE  "POWER (.name.)
         FUNCTION<tab><tab>" }

WORKAROUND

Re-insert the text in the converted document and regenerate the index. Or, if Word 5.x for the Macintosh is available, re-open the document in Word 5.x and remove the hidden formatting.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
