WD6X: List Numbering Incorrect After Applying Style

ID: Q121102

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

If you create a numbered list and then apply a style to the first numbered item, Word may incorrectly number the list.

For example, the numbering of the list below in the Before column changes to the numbering in the After column if you apply the Index 2 style to the first list item.

Before Applying Style After Applying Style
   --------------------- --------------------

   1. apples apples
   2. oranges 1. oranges
   3. pineapples 3. pineapples
   4. guavas 4. guavas

NOTE: This does not happen with every style you apply. For example, it happens with the Index 2 style, but it does not happen with the Heading 1 style.

CAUSE

This is a display problem only. If you print the document, the numbering is correct. Similarly, if you minimize and then restore the Word window (or perform some other action that causes the Word window to redraw), the numbering displays correctly.

STATUS

We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
