WD6X: Scrolling is Slow in Some Word for the Macintosh Documents

ID: q121844

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

In Word for the Macintosh, it sometimes takes a long time to scroll through a document. By comparison to Word 5.1a for the Macintosh, it may take up to twice as long to scroll through a document.

Scrolling speed is slower in page layout view. If your document contains a table, this may also affect scrolling speed.

STATUS

We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

WORKAROUND

Use one or more of the following procedures to improve the scrolling speed in Word for the Macintosh:

1. Switch to normal view to scroll through a document.

2. Turn on the Picture Placeholders option. (To locate the Picture

Placeholders option, choose Options from the Tools menu and select the
   View tab.)

3. Hide nonprinting characters by choosing the Show/Hide Paragraph button
   on the Standard toolbar.

4. If your document contains a table, turn off table gridlines. To do this,
open the Table menu. If there is a check mark next to the Gridlines
command, choose Gridlines to remove the check mark.

5. Do not use the DOWN ARROW to scroll through your document, especially
when you are in page layout view. Instead, use the scroll boxes in the
scroll bars, or use the PAGE UP and PAGE DOWN keys.

6. Insert bookmarks in your document and then use the Go To command on the
Edit menu to quickly move the insertion point to a particular location
   in your document.

7. Make sure you are using the optimal display mode on your Macintosh. This
ensures your Macintosh screen display updates (redraws) as quickly as
   possible.

8. Increase the BitMapMemory and CacheSize settings to improve Word's
overall performance. To modify these settings, run the
ToolsAdvancedSettings macro. For more information about these settings
double-click the Help button on the Standard toolbar and type "readme"
(without the quotation marks). Select the "Word Settings (6) Options"
   topic.

9. Optimize the overall performance of Word and your Macintosh. For more
information, please see the following article(s) in the Microsoft
