WD6X: Spelling Checker Does Not Select Some Misspelled Words

ID: Q118525

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

The spelling checker may not highlight words it flags as misspelled when the word is in front of a colored drawing object. If part of a word is in front of a colored drawing object and part of it is not, Word may highlight only that portion of the word that is not in front of the colored drawing object.

CAUSE

If your Highlight Color setting specifies anything other than Black and White, Word does not highlight misspelled words when they occur in front of a colored drawing or picture.

Word correctly highlights the misspelled word if your Highlight Color setting specifies Black and White or if the Black Background, White Text option is selected in the Tools Options dialog box under the General tab.

NOTE: This does not occur in Word 6.0 for Windows.

WORKAROUNDS

Method 1

Switch to normal view before you run the spelling checker in a document that contains colored drawing objects.

Method 2

Change your Highlight Color setting to Black and White. When a misspelled word occurs in front of a colored drawing object, Word displays the misspelled word in white. (To change the Highlight Color, switch to the Macintosh Control Panels and choose the Colors icon.)
