WD6X: Word Prints a Documents in Middle of Another

SYMPTOMS

When a document with multiple orientations is printed to a network printer, another user's document may print between sections of your document.

Printing a document to a PostScript (PS) file causes a separate output file each time the orientation and page size changes.

When you print to a fax driver, you are prompted for a phone number every time the orientation changes in the document.

This is also true for Master Documents with more than one subdocument.

CAUSE

Documents that contain multiple orientations and page sizes print as separate distinct print jobs in Word 6.0 for the Macintosh. This causes confusion on network printers because an unrelated print job from another user could come between different sections of the same document.

This is a limitation of the printing architecture on the Macintosh.

This is not an issue when using the QuickDraw GX printing architecture because it allows multiple orientations and paper sizes in the same print job.

MORE INFORMATION

Due to the limitations of the printing architecture on the Macintosh, any files containing multiple orientations or paper sizes will print as separate jobs. When printing to a file, you can provide a unique filename for each section of your document that contains a different orientation or page size. In any event, if you are printing over a network, your print jobs may be mixed with other users' print jobs.
