WD97: RTF Link in Netscape Starts New Instance of Word Viewer

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word Viewer 97

SYMPTOMS

If you follow a link to an .rtf (Rich Text Format) file from within Netscape Navigator, Microsoft Word Viewer 97 will be started as a standalone application (it will not be started from within Netscape Navigator).

If you follow an Internet link to a .doc file from inside Netscape Navigator, the file will start Word Viewer from within Navigator.

NOTE: Internet links to .rtf and .doc files correctly start Microsoft Word Viewer in-place from Microsoft Internet Explorer.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
