SUMMARY

This article describes new or improved features available with the August 1997 Word 97 Web Authoring Tools Update.

MORE INFORMATION

The August 1997 Word 97 Web Authoring Tools Update contains new features for working on HTML documents in Microsoft Word. With this update, Word can publish your documents to a Web server, check for broken hyperlinks, take advantage of new page designs, and convert your documents into Web pages more easily.

System Requirements

This update requires that Word 97 with Web Page Authoring (HTML) is installed on your computer. It also requires that either Microsoft Windows 95 or Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 is installed.

New Features of the Web Authoring Tools Update

The Web Authoring Tools Update includes the following new features.

Publish to Web from Within Word:

The Word 97 AutoUpdate release includes the Microsoft Web Publishing Wizard version 1.5. The Web Publishing Wizard helps you transfer files to a Web server provided by an Internet service provider, or to any Web server that supports the FrontPage Server Extensions.

To publish your Web page, click Publish to the Web on the File menu. The Wizard identifies and copies the appropriate files to the Web server.

Check Links:

The Check Links feature checks each hyperlink or linked image in a Word 97 HTML document to verify that the target destination exists. Word will prompt you to update any broken links.

New Templates, Styles, and Backgrounds:

This update includes several new Word templates, styles, and backgrounds: including a new online Resume template and the Jade, Papyrus, and Rattan backgrounds. You can add these to any existing Web page, or to new Web pages through the Web Page Wizard.

Improved Conversion Wizard for Web Pages:

The Word 97 AutoUpdate release includes an updated version of the Conversion Wizard, a tool for converting multiple files from one format to another. The updated Conversion Wizard provides new options for converting multiple Word documents to Web pages. For example, you can easily give all your Web pages a consistent look by using a common background. You can also add a title area or navigation bar of related links to the top and bottom of your Web pages.

Web Page Preview for Multiple Browsers:

If more than one Web browser is installed on your computer, you can select which one Word uses for the Web Page Preview command.

Web Page Moving:

When you click Save As on the File menu, and select a different folder to save your document in, Word prompts you to repair broken links in your document. You can either copy images to the new folder (which updates the image path to link to the new folder) or leave the links as they are.

Easily Edit Graphics:

You can now double-click a picture in an HTML document in Word to start an image editor (such as Microsoft Photo Editor, which is included on the Office CD.)

How to Obtain the Web Authoring Tools Update

If you have a dial-up connection to the World Wide Web, you can obtain the Web Authoring Tools Update by using either of the following methods.

Method 1: Use the AutoUpdate Command:

The AutoUpdate command in Word can automatically check if the latest version is available on the Microsoft Web site. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. In Word, open a Web page document.

  2. On the Tools menu, click AutoUpdate.

  3. If Word prompts you to download the latest versions, click Yes.

Method 2: Check the Office Free Stuff Web Site:

You can use your Web browser to connect to the AutoUpdate Web Page, and manually check if the latest version is available. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Connect to the following Microsoft World Wide Web site:

          http://www.microsoft.com/officefreestuff/word

NOTE: Because the Microsoft Web site is constantly updated, the site address may change without notice. If this occurs, link to the Microsoft home page at the following address:

          http://www.microsoft.com/

  2. Click Word 97 Web Authoring Tools Update.

  3. Follow the directions for downloading the Wd97au.exe file.
