SUMMARY

The Drawing Layer in Word has some keyboard shortcuts to assist you in drawing various shapes:

  • To temporarily override the Snap To Grid feature in Word, hold down the COMMAND key as you draw. If Snap To Grid is not on, holding down the COMMAND key activates it.
  • To return an imported graphic to its original size after cropping or scaling in Word, hold down the COMMAND key and double-click the graphic.
  • To draw more than one object without having to re-click that object's button before drawing the next one, double-click the tool. Click the button again (or select a menu item) to restore the insertion point. This applies to the Line, Rectangle, Ellipse, Arc, Freeform, Text Box, and Callout tools.
  • To create an object centered at a specific point in Word, select the Rectangle, Ellipse, or Arc tool and then press and hold the COMMAND+OPTION keys as you drag out an object. Adding the SHIFT key creates a perfect square or circle from a specific point.
  • Hold down the SHIFT key as you drag a line. This aids in drawing horizontal, vertical, or 45-degree lines.
  • To constrain an object (rectangle to a square, arc to a circular arc, and ellipse to a circle), hold down the SHIFT key when dragging.
