SYMPTOMS

When you delete or edit the starting number of a ListNum field in a table, Word may hang without displaying an error message.

WORKAROUND

Use the Sequence field in the table instead of the ListNum field.

For more information about the sequence field, click Contents And Index on the Help menu (or on the Balloon Help menu if you are using a version of the Macintosh operating system earlier than 8.0), click the Index button in Word Help, type the following text

   Sequence

and then click Show Topics. Select the "Field codes: Seq (Sequence) field" topic, and click Go To. If you are unable to find the information you need, ask the Office Assistant.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
