WD98: Index Entries Convert Incorrectly from MacWord 5.x

SYMPTOMS

When a Word 5.x for the Macintosh document containing index entries (such as those in the following examples) is converted to Word 98 Macintosh Edition, the text may not convert correctly. Some of the text in the index entry may be deleted when converted.

For example, if you insert the following index entries in a Word 5.x document

   .i.PERCENT: POWER (.name.) XX.X<tab><tab>;
   i.POWER (.name.) FUNCTION<tab><tab>;

   .name.) XX.X<tab><tab>;{ XE  "PERCENT: POWER
   (.name.) XX.X<tab><tab>" }
   .name.) FUNCTION<tab><tab>; { XE  "POWER (.name.)
   FUNCTION<tab><tab>" }

WORKAROUND

Re-insert the text in the converted document and regenerate the index. Or if Word 5.x for the Macintosh is available, re-open the document in Word 5.x and remove the hidden formatting.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
