SYMPTOMS

When you look at a document in online layout view, Word will report a different number of pages in the document than it does when you look at the document in another view, such as normal, page layout, outline, or master document.

CAUSE

Word paginates the document differently in online layout view to optimize the view for the window size.

RESOLUTION

To display the document as it will be printed, switch to page layout view.

STATUS

This functionality is by design.

Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition provides a new document viewing option called online layout view. This view optimizes the layout to make reading the text easier. To do this, Word increases the text size and wraps the text to fit inside the current window configuration. This view is designed primarily to view HTML or Web style documents that support background colors and textures. The changes made to the document to enhance readability affect the display of the document only. The document may print very differently from the way it is displayed when this online layout view is selected.

MORE INFORMATION

The size of the document window determines the number of pages reported in online view. Making the document window larger decreases the number of pages reported in online view.
