ACC: Import Specification Doesn't Convert Properly

Novice: Requires knowledge of the user interface on single-user computers.

If you create an import/export specification in Microsoft Access version 2.0 for a fixed-width table with no fields specified in the specification grid and then convert the database to a Microsoft Access for Windows 95 version 7.0 database, you may receive one or both of the following error messages when you attempt to access that specification in Microsoft Access 7.0:

An error occurred trying to load import/export specification 'Spec name' 

   -or-
Page fault in vb232.dll


RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, follow these steps:

  1. Open the database where you want to store the import/export specification.


  2. On the File menu, click Imp/Exp Setup.


  3. Select the proper specification from the Specification Name box.


  4. Fill out the columns in the field information section for each field in the text file, and then click OK.


  5. Quit Microsoft Access 2.0 and start Microsoft Access 7.0.


  6. On the File menu, click Open Database.


  7. Select the database you want to open. Note that when prompted, you are now able to successfully convert the Microsoft Access 2.0 database to Microsoft Access 7.0.

Steps to Reproduce Behavior


  1. Open a blank database in Microsoft Access 2.0.


  2. Open the sample database NWIND.MDB.


  3. Create and save the import specification for Text (Fixed width).


  4. Convert the database to version 7.0.


  5. On the File menu, click Get External Data, and then click Import.


  6. In the Import dialog box, under Files Of Type, select "Text Files (*.txt, *.csv, *.tab, *.asc)."


  7. Find and highlight any text file, and then click Import.


  8. In the Text Import Wizard dialog box, click the Advanced button.


  9. In the <File Name> Import Specifications dialog box, click Specs.


  10. Highlight the Spec name created above and then click Open. Note that you receive the following error message:
    An error occurred trying to load import/export specification 'spec name'


  11. Click OK.


  12. Repeat steps 8 - 11. Note that you receive an error message, the details of which state that a page fault has occurred in vb232.dll and that Microsoft Access will shut down.
