XL: Run-Time Error 1004 Appears When Saving File in HTML Format

SYMPTOMS

In the versions of Microsoft Excel listed at the beginning of this article, if you run the Internet Assistant Wizard by clicking Save As HTML on the File menu and click Finish in step 4 of the wizard, you may receive the following error message: 

   Run-time error '1004':
   The formula you typed contains an error.

   - For information about fixing common formula problems, click Help.

   - To get assistance entering a function, click OK, then click
     Function on the Insert menu.

   - If you are not trying to enter a formula, avoid using an equal sign
     (=) or minus sign (-), or precede it with a single quotation mark
     (').
When you receive this error message, the Internet Assistant Wizard stops running.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if, in step 3 of the wizard, you enter a quotation mark (") in any of the following boxes: 

   Title
   Header
   Description below header
   Last Update on
   By
   Email
For example, if you enter "The HTML Wizard" (with the quotation marks) in the By box, the problem occurs.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, do not enter any quotation marks in step 3 of the wizard. If you want quotation marks to appear in the Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) file, manually edit the HTML file after you save it in Microsoft Excel.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
