SUMMARY

The following error message may appear when you attempt to edit an embedded object in Word for Windows:

   Word cannot locate the server application for <server application
   name> objects. Install the server application with the setup
   program.

This message may be caused when you do one of the following:

Edit information that was created in another application when Word cannot locate the server application. (The server application is not in the current path.)
-or-
Erase the application or move it to another directory.
-or-
Disconnect the link to the network where the application is stored.

Workarounds

Networks

If the error message occurs on a network, verify that you are connected to the network drive:

Verify that the server application is installed.
Add the directory of the server application to the PATH environment variable in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. The path must include a drive designation. For example, "C:\WINWORD" is a valid path whereas "\WINWORD" is not.

Windows Version 3.0

Edit the path in the [EMBEDDING] section of the WIN.INI file to contain the path to the server application.

Note: If you use this method you do not need to add the path to the PATH environment variable in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.

Windows Version 3.1

Use REGEDIT.EXE to update the registration database (REG.DAT) file:

   Caution: Make a backup of the REG.DAT file before you attempt to
   alter the file.

1. Open Program Manager. From the File menu, choose Run.

2. Type REGEDIT and choose the OK button.

3. From the Registered File Type list box, choose a file type (for

   example, Word Document).

4. From the Edit menu, choose Modify File Type.

5. In the Command box, type the correct location or use the Browse

   button to locate the WINWORD.EXE file. Choose the OK button to
   accept your changes.

The changes will be written to the REG.DAT file when you exit REGEDIT.EXE.

Microsoft Word for Windows version 2.0 uses information from the REG.DAT file for object linking and embedding (OLE) activities. In Windows version 3.1, the information in registration database (REG.DAT) is used when you open or print a file from File Manager. This information is also used by other applications that support OLE. The registration database (REG.DAT) is set up and maintained by Windows and Windows applications. It is located in the WINDOWS directory. This file should not be moved or deleted. Doing so may result in loss of functionality in File Manager, Program Manager, and applications that support OLE.
