WinWord: Cannot Apply Frame Formatting to Footnote Text Style

ID: Q88132

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Word for Windows, you can apply frame formatting to the Footnote Text style even though it is not possible to insert a frame in a footnote. When you create a footnote using the Footnote Text style to which frame formatting has been applied, the text is not framed as indicated by the style definition, and no error message is displayed.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft Word for Windows listed above. We are researching this problem and will post more information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION

You cannot insert a frame in footnote text. The Frame command is unavailable on the Insert menu if the insertion point is positioned in footnote text.

The Frame button should be unavailable in the Style dialog box when the Footnote Text style is selected. However, the Frame button is available, and Word allows you to apply frame formatting. If you apply frame formatting to the Footnote Text style and choose the Apply button or the Change button in the Style dialog box, the following message appears:

Do you want to change the properties of the standard style?

If you choose the Yes button, Word for Windows displays the frame information as part of the style definition; however, if you insert a footnote in your document, it is not framed.

Note: If you apply frame formatting to the Footnote Reference style, it is applied correctly to footnote references.
