Word 6.0 Setup Does Not Install New UNIDRV.DLL File

ID: Q108502

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

When you install Word for Windows, Setup does not automatically install the updated UNIDRV.DLL file, which is supplied with Word.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word for Windows version 6.0. This problem was corrected in Word version 6.0a.

RESOLUTION

You must install the UNIDRV.DLL file manually, using the following procedure:

1. Exit Windows.

2. Copy the DECOMP.EXE file from Word for Windows Disk 1 into your Word

   program directory (by default, C:\WINWORD).

3. Place the Word disk that contains the UNIDRV.DL_ file in your floppy
disk drive (Disk 2 of the 3.5-inch disks, Disk 1 of the 5.25-inch
   disks).

4. At the MS-DOS command prompt, type the following and press ENTER:

      c:\winword\decomp a:\unidrv.dl_ c:\windows\system\unidrv.dll

Note: The above syntax assumes that C:\WINWORD is your Word program
directory, drive A is the floppy disk drive where you placed the Word
disk in step 3 above, and that C:\WINDOWS is your Windows program
   directory.

5. When the DECOMP program prompts you to append an existing file, choose
   no.

6. When the DECOMP program prompts you to overwrite an existing file,
   choose yes.

MORE INFORMATION

Word 6.0 supplied updated UNIDRV.DLL and PSCRIPT.DRV files to correct problems associated with printing documents with large numbers of fonts. If you use the previous versions of these files, you may experience random low memory error messages or GP (general protection) fault errors when you print, view, or edit your document. The latest version of the UNIDRV.DLL is 3.1.4.
