Word 97 Converter Setup Couldn't Locate Compatible Version

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to install the Word 97 import converter, you may receive the following error message:

   Microsoft Word 97 Converter setup was not completed for the following
   reason:

   Setup could not locate an installed version of Word compatible with the
   Word 8.0 converter. This converter is suitable for use with Microsoft
   Word 6.0 and 95 [7.0] only.

WORKAROUND

Re-install Microsoft Word. Then install the Microsoft Word 97 Converter.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
