Word Hangs When You Save to a LAN Manager Directory

SUMMARY

If you try to save a Word for Windows document over a Microsoft LAN Manager version 2.0 network to a network directory in which you have no rights, Word for Windows may hang (stop responding).

When you try to save a document to a network directory in which you have no rights, you should receive the following error message: 

   Word cannot save or create this file
If Workstation Heuristic (Wkheuristic) Bit #8 is set to 0 (zero) in your LAN Manager LANMAN.INI file, your system may hang if you save to a directory in which you have no rights. Wrkheuristic #8 controls opportunistic locking (opplock). When this bit is set to 0 (zero), it is disabled and no buffering occurs. When this bit is set to 1 (enabled), opplock is controlled and some buffering occurs.

Opplock is a LAN Manager performance enhancement feature for file sharing. When opplock is on, the file is opened on the server with "deny none" rights, allowing faster buffering. If another workstation requests access to the same file, the server lets the first workstation flush data before granting access to the second.

Workaround

Use the following instructions to set Workstation Heuristic Bit #8 to 1:

  1. Open your LANMAN.INI file in a text editor.

  2. Find the following line in your LANMAN.INI file: 

          wrkheuristics = 111121100221200000000000000000000

  3. Replace the above line with the following line, which changes the ninth digit to 1: 

          wrkheuristics = 111121101221200000000000000000000
