The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, versions 5.0, 5.1
  • The Macintosh operating system versions 6.07, 6.08, 7.0 and later

SUMMARY

In versions 5.0 and 5.1 of Word, straight apostrophes and quotation marks can easily be changed to curly apostrophes and quotation marks (sometimes called "smart quotes").

To change straight apostrophes and quotation marks to curly apostrophes and quotation marks, do the following:

  1. Place the insertion point at the beginning of the document.

  2. From the Tools menu, choose Preferences.

  3. In the Preferences dialog box, choose the General category and select the "Smart" Quotes option. Close the Preferences dialog box.

  4. From the Edit menu, choose Replace.

  5. In the Find What box, type a single apostrophe (').

  6. In the Replace With box, type a single apostrophe (').

  7. Choose the Replace All button.

  8. Repeat steps 5-7 with a double straight quotation mark (").

MORE INFORMATION

With this procedure, the Replace routine checks the state of the Smart Quotes option. If the Smart Quotes check box is selected, Word determines whether a straight apostrophe or quotation mark should be replaced with an opening or closing smart apostrophe or quotation mark based on the placement of leading and following spaces in relation to the quotation mark. *
