Word: Printing Multiple Copies of a Document in Collated Form

SUMMARY

The Apple LaserWriter is driven by the PostScript page description language, which allows for multiple copies, but does not collate those copies. Instead, it prints as many copies of the first page as indicated in the Print dialog box, then proceeds to the second page, and continues until the last copy of the last page of the document is printed.

Microsoft Word for the Macintosh versions 3.0x has a feature that allows you to work around this limitation. (This feature was removed from Word 4.0 and 5.0.) To print a collated print job in 3.0x only, do the following:

  1. Create the document to print and save the file.

  2. From the File menu, choose Page Setup.

  3. In the Next File box, type the name of the document just saved (that is, the document you want to print as collated).

  4. From the File menu, choose Print. Keep the number of copies to be printed at 1.

NOTE: In Word 3.0x, this procedure puts the printing process into an infinite loop. Press COMMAND+PERIOD (.) to break out of the loop when the last copy is printed.

NOTE: In Word versions 4.0 and later, this process generates the following error message: 

   Circular next file chain: "<document name>"
