WordBasic Errors Creating New Document, Opening, or Saving

Last reviewed: January 19, 1998
Article ID: Q122992
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c
  • Microsoft Word for Windows 95, versions 7.0, 7.0a

SYMPTOMS

You may receive the following error message, or other WordBasic errors, when you choose Open from the File menu, when you try to create a new document, or when you try to save a document.

   WordBasic err=124
   Undefined sub or function

CAUSE

This error may result when you have one of the following products installed:

  • MasterWord version 2.0
  • Woody's Office Power Pack (WOPR) version 2.0
  • Any third-party add-in product that is incompatible with Word 6.0

WORKAROUNDS

Method 1: Rename existing macros

Rename the FileOpen, FileSave, and FileNew macros to xFileOpen, xFileSave, and xFileNew. Once the macros are renamed, Word will return to its default functionality instead of running the macros.

NOTE: If you have further problems, you may choose to rename your Normal template. To do this, exit Word for Windows and rename the NORMAL.DOT file to NORMAL.OLD and restart Word.

Method 2: Upgrade to later version

Upgrade to a later version of MasterWord, WOPR, or other add-in product.

MORE INFORMATION

MasterWord, WOPR, and other third party add-in products may replace Word's built-in commands (FileOpen, FileNew, and FileSave, for example) with macros. These macros are stored in your Normal template. When you upgrade from Word 2.0 to Word 6.0, your original Normal template is preserved. If you open the Normal template and save it, many of the macros will be converted. However, others are not converted, and as a result you will receive one or more WordBasic errors. For additional information on WordBasic commands that have changed between the two versions of Word, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
