Wrong Page Size for Word 6.0 Document Object Opened to Edit

The information in this article applies to:

Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c

SYMPTOMS

The page size of an embedded Word 6.0 Document object may change to unusual dimensions when you do the following:

1. Create a document in Word 6.0 for Windows that contains an embedded Word

   6.0 Document object, displayed as an icon. (When you embed the Word 6.0
   Document object, select the Display as Icon option in the Insert Object
   dialog box.)

2. In Word 6.0, save the document in Word for Windows 2.0 file format, and

   then close the document.

3. In Word 2.x for Windows, open the document you saved in step 2 above.

4. Double-click the Word 6.0 Document object icon to open the embedded

   object in Word 6.0. Notice that the document displays as a narrow
   column. In Word 6.0, if you choose Page Setup from the File menu and
   select the Paper Size tab, the Width setting is a very small number,
   such as .96 or .97 inch.

5. If you close the Word 6.0 Document object and return to Word 2.x, the

   object no longer displays as an icon.

   Note: You can change the Paper Size settings of the embedded Word 6.0
   Document object back to the correct size in Word 6.0, close the object,
   and return to Word 2.x. However, the next time you open the Word 6.0
   Document object, the Paper Size will be slightly narrower than the
   previous setting. For example, if you change the Paper Size to letter
   size (8.5 inches by 11 inches), it may change to 5.99 inches by 11
   inches (a custom page size) next time you double-click the Word 6.0
   Document object to edit it in Word 6.0.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word versions 6.0, 6.0a, and 6.0c for Windows. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION

Microsoft has reproduced a similar problem with a Word 6.0 Document object embedded in a form in a PowerBuilder application. (PowerBuilder is an application development tool by PowerSoft Corp.)
