SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel, if the Debug window is displayed immediately after you define a name on a worksheet using the Names box, you are unable to type in the Debug window.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs only if the Debug window is displayed immediately after you use the Names box. For example, if you enter a function procedure on a worksheet, and the function contains a breakpoint, the function is updated on the worksheet when you define a name using the Names box. When this updating occurs, the Debug window is displayed, but the focus is still on the worksheet, and you cannot return the focus to the Debug window by clicking the mouse on the Debug window.

Note that when this occurs, the mouse still functions in the Debug window. For example, you can select text, and scroll in either the Immediate or the code pane.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, you must close the Debug Window, and then open it again, in order to type in either of the Debug Window panes. To display the Debug window, choose Debug Window from the View menu.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in a later version of Microsoft Excel.
