SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel, when you use the Template Wizard to create a database linked to a Microsoft Excel template file, when you add a record to a database that already contains 16383 records, you do not receive an error message. However, the records that you add to a database that contains 16383 records are not added to the database file.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the limit for the number of rows that a Microsoft Excel worksheet can contain is 16383. You cannot add more than 16384 rows to a worksheet. However, when you use the Template Wizard to link data in a template file to a database, if the worksheet already contains 16383 records (plus one row for the field name), you do not receive an error message when you use the template file to add a record to the database. However, any records that you add beyond record 16383 using the template file are not saved to the database.

RESOLUTION

To avoid losing data that you save to a database using a template file (created by using the Template Wizard), do not add more than 16383 records to the database file. You must open the database file to check the number of records periodically to make sure you do not exceed this limit. Note that additionally, you can save records to multiple worksheets in the same Microsoft Excel database file.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
