XL97: Embedded Links to Other Workbooks Cause Error When Exiting

SYMPTOMS

When you quit Microsoft Excel 97, you may receive the following error message:

   This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.
   If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.

If you click Details, you receive the following error message:

   EXCEL caused an invalid page fault in module EXCEL.EXE at
   014f:30095945.

Note that the address of the invalid page fault may vary.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the following conditions are true:

NOTE: This problem does not occur if you click No when you are prompted to update the workbook with changes to the other workbook, or if a message does not appear when you open the workbook.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, save and/or close any workbooks that contain embedded links to other workbooks before you quit Microsoft Excel 97.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

In Microsoft Excel 97 workbooks, you can create embedded links to other documents, including other workbooks, by using the Object dialog box (click Object on the Insert menu).
