SYMPTOMS

If you use the Internet Assistant Wizard to save Microsoft Excel data as a Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) document or you use the Web Form Wizard to save a worksheet as a form, you may receive the following error message:

The wizard can not save the file to the location you specified.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if you are trying to save either an HTML document or a Microsoft Excel form to a File Transfer Protocol (FTP) site. The Internet Assistant Wizard and the Web Form Wizard do not support saving files to an FTP site.

WORKAROUND

You cannot use either of these two wizards to save files directly to an FTP site. To work around this problem, use the appropriate following method.

Method 1: Internet Assistant Wizard Users

Create an HTML document by using this wizard. To save the HTML document on an FTP server, follow these steps:

1. Create the HTML document by using the wizard and save it locally on your

   computer.

2. Open the HTML document in Microsoft Word 97.

3. On the File menu, click Save As.

4. In the Save As dialog box, click Add/Modify FTP Locations in the Save In

   list.

5. In the Add/Modify FTP Locations dialog box, enter the name of the FTP
site in the "Name of FTP site" box, and then click Add. Click OK.

6. In the Save In list, click the FTP site you added in step 5.

7. Enter the name for the document in the File Name box, and then click

   Save.

This method allows you to save the HTML document on the specified FTP site.

Method 2: Web Form Wizard Users

To create and save the form, follow these steps:

1. Create the Microsoft Excel form by using the wizard and save it locally

   on your computer.

2. Open the form in Microsoft Excel.

3. On the File menu, click Save As.

4. In the Save As dialog box, click Add/Modify FTP Locations in the Save In

   list.

5. In the Add/Modify FTP Locations dialog box, enter the name of the FTP
site in the "Name of FTP site" box, and then click Add. Click OK.

6. In the Save In list, select the FTP site you added in step 5.

7. Enter the name for the document in the File Name box, and then click

   Save.

This method allows you to save the form on the specified FTP site.

STATUS

This behavior is by design of Microsoft Excel.

MORE INFORMATION

Internet Assistant Wizard

You can make Microsoft Excel data available to users on your intranet or on the World Wide Web so that anyone who has a Web browser can view it. Use the Internet Assistant add-in to convert worksheet data or charts to HTML Web pages that you can post on the Web.

Web Form Wizard

Requesting and gathering information over the Internet requires using forms. In addition, you must have some knowledge of the server, database storage, and computer programming.

Because you can use a Microsoft Excel worksheet to simulate a form, you can use Microsoft Excel 97 as an engine to generate a form for the Web.

When others visit your Web site and make a request for the Microsoft Excel 97 form, the form is downloaded to the client, and Microsoft Excel 97 is started. When the user completes the form and clicks Submit, Microsoft Excel submits the data on the form to the database on your Web server. Then, Microsoft Excel closes the form and quits.
