XL97: Printer Unavailable Error on Print or Page Setup

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows, if you click Page Setup, Print, or Print Preview on the File menu, you may receive either of the following error messages:

   Current printer is unavailable. Select another printer.

    -or-

   There are no printers installed. Use the Printers option in Control
   Panel to install a printer.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if you do not have any printer drivers installed.

RESOLUTION

Use the Printers control panel to install at least one printer driver. After you have installed a printer driver, you can use Page Setup, Print, and Print Preview to set up, print, and view worksheets in Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows.

STATUS

This behavior is by design of Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows.

When you click Page Setup, Print, or Print Preview on the File menu, Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows requests printer information from Microsoft Windows 95 or Microsoft Windows NT. If no printer drivers are installed, no printer information is available, and Microsoft Excel cannot continue.
