This may occur when you reboot your computer after running Chkdsk. This behavior can occur if you are running Windows NT 3.51 Service Pack 5 with newer fixes such as the fix described in the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: Q163852 Invalid Operand with Locked CMPXCHG8B Instruction When this occurs, your kernel file has a date stamp of 08/17/1998 or later for U.S. English builds. CAUSE ===== The problem described in the article listed in the "Symptoms" section was fixed in a way that was prone to timing issues during startup. RESOLUTION ========== A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem described in this article and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem.
