The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition, if you open a workbook that contains a data map, the data map is imported as a picture and appears in black and white.

If you double-click the data map, you receive the following error message:

Cannot start the source application for this object. There may not be
   enough memory available.

CAUSE

These problems occur because Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition does not include support for data maps. Data maps are temporarily converted into pictures when you open them in Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh.

STATUS

This behavior is by design of Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition.

MORE INFORMATION

In Microsoft Excel for Windows 95, version 7.0, and Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows, you can create a data map in a worksheet by following these steps:

  1. In a worksheet, select a range of cells that contains geographic data, such as country names or state names, and associated data. For example:

          State Population
          Maryland 5008060
          North Carolina 7019142
          Texas 18276706
          Washington 5345474

  2. On the Insert menu, click Map. Or, click the Map tool on the Standard toolbar.

  3. Draw the map on the worksheet.

  4. If the Multiple Maps Available dialog box appears, select the map you want to use, and click OK.

The map appears in the worksheet.

If you open a workbook that contains a data map in Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition, the following dialog box appears:

   Graphics Filter
   Converting: Metafile

When the workbook opens, the map appears as a black and white picture. If you select the picture, the formula bar contains a formula similar to the following:

   =EMBED("MSMap.8","")

If you save the workbook in Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition and then reopen the workbook in Microsoft Excel for Windows, the data map appears in color and opens for editing when you double-click it.
