XL98: Error Inserting or Deleting Rows or Columns After Undo

Last reviewed: February 6, 1998
Article ID: Q180609
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition

SYMPTOMS

When you insert or delete a row or column, the following error message is displayed:

The application "Microsoft Excel" has unexpectedly quit, because an
error of type 2 has occurred.

You should save your work in other open applications and restart the
   computer.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:

  • The workbook contains a defined name that refers to a three-dimensional (3-D) reference.

        -and-

  • You group items on a worksheet, insert or delete a row or column, reference the defined name, and then click Undo on the Edit menu to undo the operation.

        -and-

  • You insert or delete a column or row that causes a formula that refers to the defined name to be recalculated.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, do not insert or delete a column in a workbook that contains a defined name that refers to a 3-D formula when you are in group mode.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION

A 3-D reference is a formula that refers to multiple worksheet in the same workbook. For example, the defined name "Test" can refer to the following formula:

   =Sum(Sheet1:Sheet5!$A$10)

This formula adds the values in cell A10 in sheets 1 through 5. If cell A10 contains the value 3 in each sheet, Test returns the value 15.

You can place a worksheet in group mode by holding SHIFT or CTRL and clicking the sheet tabs you want to group.
