XL98: Rotated Text May Not Be Visible

SYMPTOMS

When you rotate text in a cell, the text may not be visible in a worksheet.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if you specify a small angle rotation (between approximately -5 and 5 degrees, depending on the cell location) and you use cell borders.

When you rotate cell text and you use any cell border, the text is positioned to fit in the center of an imaginary parallelogram with sides that are angled to the same degree as the cell text. This may cause the text to appear on top of other cells in the worksheet. When the degree of the angle is small, the center of the imaginary parallelogram may be located far from the actual cell, and the text may be positioned off the screen.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, do not use any of the cell borders when you rotate cell text and use very small angles. If you want to use cell borders, increase the angle of rotation (more negative or more positive) so that the slope of the sides of the parallelogram is not as steep. As you increase the angle of the rotated text, the text moves closer to the actual cell location.

STATUS

This behavior is by design of Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition.
