XL98: Unable to Select Sheets After Using Spelling Checker

Last reviewed: February 6, 1998
Article ID: Q180607
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition

SYMPTOMS

When you click Cancel in the Spelling dialog box, you cannot switch to worksheets (tabs) in a workbook.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when you do all of the following:

  • You group (select two or more worksheets at one time) in the workbook.

        -and-

  • You select more than one cell in the active worksheet.

        -and-

  • You click Spelling on the Tools menu or click the Spelling tool.

        -and-

  • You click Cancel after you click one of the following operations in the Spelling dialog box:

          Add
          Change
          Change All
          Ignore
          Ignore All

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, follow these steps:

  1. Save and close the workbook.

  2. Quit and restart Microsoft Excel, and then open the workbook.

To avoid this problem in the future, run the spelling checker for each worksheet. If you want to check the spelling for multiple worksheets, select one cell instead of selecting multiple cells after you group the worksheets.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
