RESOLUTION ========== To resolve this issue, download and install the "You are Victorious!" Message Update for Age of Empires II (Age2cpfix.exe) from the Microsoft Download Center. In this situation, you will win with in a couple of minutes because the computer will give up. To resolve this behavior, set the population to 50-100, and then select a harder setting. If this is the case, uninstall the game, delete the game folder, empty the Windows Temp folder, run the Registry Checker tool, restart the computer in Safe mode, and then reinstall the program in Safe mode. To do this, use the following methods in the order in which they are presented. Uninstall Age of Empires II --------------------------- 1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel. 2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs. 3. Empty the Temp Folder --------------------- To empty the Temp folder, follow the appropriate steps for your version of Microsoft Windows. Microsoft Windows 95: To empty the Temp folder: 1. Run the Windows Registry Checker Tool (Scanreg.exe) --------------------------------------------------- If you use a Windows 98-based or Windows Me-based computer, run the Registry Checker tool with the /fix and /opt command-line switches: 1. Restart the computer to a command prompt. To do this, use the appropriate method for your version of Microsoft Windows. Windows 98: Restart your computer, press and hold down the CTRL key after your computer completes the Power On Self Test (POST), and then select "Command prompt only" from the Startup menu. Windows Me: Insert the Windows Me Startup disk into your floppy disk drive, restart your computer, and then select "Minimal boot" from the Startup menu. 2. At the command prompt, type "scanreg /fix" (without the quotation marks), and then press ENTER. NOTE: The /fix command-line switch instructs the Registry Checker tool to repair any damaged portions of the registry. 3. When the Registry Checker tool finishes repairing the registry, press ENTER. 4. At the command prompt, type "scanreg /opt" (without the quotation marks), and then press ENTER. NOTE: The /opt command-line switch instructs the Registry Checker tool to optimize the registry by removing unused space. 5. When the Registry Checker tool finishes optimizing the registry, restart the computer. Windows ME: 1. Click Start, click Run, type "msconfig" (without the quotation marks) in the Open box, and then click OK. 2. On the General tab, click Selective startup. 3. Click to clear all of the check boxes under Selective startup. 4. On the Startup tab, click to select the *StateMgr check box. 5. Click OK. When you see the prompt to restart your computer, click Yes. After the computer restarts, click Start, click Run, type "msconfig" (without the quotation marks) in the Open box, and then click OK. IMPORTANT: Ensure that the check boxes you cleared in the General tab are still cleared. Proceed to step 6 if all of the check boxes are cleared. If you see a disabled or gray check box, your computer is not clean-booted and you may need assistance from the manufacturer of the program that places a check mark back into Msconfig. 6. After you verify that your computer is clean-booted in step 5, you can isolate the issue. If the original issue does not reoccur after the clean boot, select one item at a time under Selective startup, and then restart the computer to see if the additional entry reproduces the original issue. Windows 98: 1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Information. 2. On the Tools menu, click System Configuration Utility. 3. On the General tab, click Selective Startup, and then click to clear the following check boxes: - Process Config.sys file - Process Autoexec.bat file - Process Winstart.bat file (if available) - Process Win.ini file - Load Startup group items 4. Click OK. When you are prompted to restart the computer, do so. NOTE: To restore your original Startup options, click Normal Startup on the General tab in the System Configuration Utility tool.
