Other Microsoft multiplayer programs may continue to function on the Zone. CAUSE ===== This behavior can occur when you install Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me). RESOLUTION ========== To resolve this issue, use the following methods in the order in which they are presented. Uninstall Combat Flight Simulator --------------------------------- To uninstall Combat Flight Simulator: 1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel. 2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs. 3. Click Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator. 4. Click Add/Remove. 5. Follow the instructions on the screen to uninstall Combat Flight Simulator. Delete the Combat Flight Simulator Folder ----------------------------------------- If the Combat Flight Simulator folder was not deleted when you uninstalled the game, delete the folder: 1. Double-click My Computer. 2. Double-click the C: drive. 3. Double-click the Program Files folder, and then double-click the Microsoft Games folder. 4. Note if the Combat Flight Simulator folder exists. If the Combat Flight Simulator folder exists, right-click the folder, and then click Delete. If the Combat Flight Simulator folder does not exist, proceed to the next method. 5. Close all the windows on the desktop. Empty the Recycle Bin --------------------- To empty the Recycle Bin: 1. On the desktop, double-click the Recycle Bin. 2. On the File menu, click Empty Recycle Bin. 3. Close the Recycle Bin. Delete the Windows\Temp Folder ------------------------------ To delete the Windows\Temp folder: 1. Click Start, and then click Run. 2. On the Open line, type "command" (without the quotation marks), and then click OK. 3. At the command prompt, type the following line, and then press ENTER. cd %winbootdir%\temp 4. Note the folder on the command prompt. If the prompt has been changed to a Temp folder similar to the following folder, continue to the next step: C:\WINDOWS\TEMP If there is no Temp folder, proceed to the next method. 5. Type the following line, and then press ENTER: deltree %winbootdir%\temp 6. To confirm the deletion, press Y, and then press ENTER. 7. Type exit , and then press ENTER. Download the Latest Version of DirectX -------------------------------------- To download the latest version of DirectX: 1. Visit the following Microsoft Web site: http://www.microsoft.com/directx/homeuser/downloads/default.asp 2. Click the link for your version of Microsoft Windows. 3. In the File Download dialog box, click "Save this program to disk", and then click OK. 4. In the "Save in" box, click Desktop, and then click Save. 5. When the download is complete, click Close. Restart Your Computer in Safe Mode ---------------------------------- To restart your computer in Safe Mode: 1. Click Start, and then click Shut Down. 2. Click Restart The Computer, and then click Yes. 3. If you are running Microsoft Windows 95, press F5 when you see the message "Starting Windows 95". If you are running Microsoft Windows 98 or Microsoft Windows Me, press and hold the SHIFT key as soon as the POST (Power on Self Test) is completed. 4. Close the message about Safe Mode. Delete Direct X Registry Keys ----------------------------- WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk. To delete the DirectX registry keys: 1. Click Start, and then click Run. 2. In the Open box, type "regedit" (without the quotation marks), and then click OK. 3. Click the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\DirectPlay 4. On the Registry menu, click Export Registry File. 5. In the "File name" box, type "DPlay.reg" (without the quotation marks). 6. Click Save. 7. Right-click the DirectX registry key, and then click Delete. 8. Click Yes, to confirm the deletion. 9. Click the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\DirectX 10. On the Registry menu, click Export Registry File. 11. In the "File name" box, type "DX.reg" (without the quotation marks). 12. Click Save. 13. Right-click the DirectPlay registry key, and then click Delete. 14. Click Yes, to confirm the deletion. 15. Quit Registry Editor. 16. Restart your computer in Safe Mode. Reinstall DirectX in Safe Mode ------------------------------ To reinstall DirectX in Safe Mode: 1. In Safe Mode, double-click the DirectX file that you downloaded from the DirectX Web site. 2. Follow the instructions on the screen to install DirectX. 3. Restart your computer in normal mode. Reinstall Combat Flight Simulator in a New Folder ------------------------------------------------- To reinstall Combat Flight Simulator in a new folder: 1. Insert the Combat Flight Simulator CD-ROM into the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. If the Setup program does not start automatically, follow these steps: a. Click Start, and then click Run. b. In the Open box, type ":\setup.exe" (without the quotation marks) where is the drive letter of the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. c. Click OK. 2. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation of Combat Flight Simulator. NOTE: When you are prompted for the installation location, type "c:\CFS" (without the quotation marks). Try to Play the Game on the Zone -------------------------------- To play the game on the Zone: 1. Connect to the following Zone Web site: http://www.zone.com 2. Go to the Combat Flight Simulator game rooms. 3. Try to join a session.
