XADM: Event Error 251: Fatal Internal MTA Error Occurred

SYMPTOMS

Under certain circumstances, the Microsoft Exchange Message Transfer Agent (MTA) will log an error similar to the following 251 error in the Windows NT Event Log:

A fatal internal MTA error occurred. Entity control block reassigned because of a configuration error. Statistics for entity /O=COMPANY/OU=DEPARTMENT/CN=DIVISION/CN=DISTRICT/CN=HUB01 TO EUROPE VIA HUB02 (X400) have been lost. [MTA MAIN BASE 1 43](16)

CAUSE

This error will occur if the MTA is not restarted after the administrator adds an additional 30 MTA's to the same site.

WORKAROUND

Restart the MTA that is generating the Windows NT Event Log error. This will reload the MTA's memory listing of the site's configuration.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Exchange Server version 4.0. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Exchange Server 4.0 U.S. Service Pack 2. For information on obtaining the service pack, query on the following word in the Microsoft Knowledge Base (without the spaces):
