If you click any other sound clip, the program plays the sound. CAUSE ===== This behavior can occur for any of the following reasons: - The wav= entry in the [mci extensions] section of the Win.ini file is missing or invalid. - The [MCI] Sound driver is not installed in Microsoft Windows 3.x. - The Wave Audio Device (Media Control) is not installed in Microsoft Windows 95/98. - The GSM 610 Audio Compression Codec is missing or not configured properly. RESOLUTION ========== To resolve this issue, use the appropriate method for your version of Windows. Windows 98 ---------- To resolve this issue on a Windows 98-based computer, follow these steps: 1. Click Start, and then click Run. 2. In the Open box, type "win.ini" (without the quotation marks), and then click OK. 3. On the Find menu, click Search. 4. In the Find What box, type "[mci extensions]" (without the quotation marks), click Find Next, and then click Cancel. 5. Verify that the following line is present in the [mci extensions] section: wav=waveaudio 6. Quit Notepad. 7. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel. 8. Double-click Multimedia. 9. On the Devices tab, double-click Media Control Devices, and then double-click Wave Audio Device (Media Control). NOTE: If Wave Audio Device (Media Control) is missing, follow the instructions in the More Information section to install it. 10. Click Use This Media Control Device, and then click OK. 11. On the Devices tab, double-click Audio Compression Codecs, and then double-click Microsoft GSM 6.10 Audio CODEC. 12. Click Use This Audio Codec, and then click Settings. 13. Click Auto-Configure, and then click OK. 14. Click OK, and then click OK again. 15. Close Control Panel. On the File menu in Program Manager, click Run. 2. In the Command Line box, type "win.ini" (without the quotation marks), and then click OK. 3. On the Find menu, click Search. 4. In the Find What box, type "[mci extensions]" (without the quotation marks), click Find Next, and then click Cancel. 5. Verify that the following line is present in the [mci extensions] section: wav=waveaudio 6. Quit Notepad. 7. In the Main group in Program Manager, double-click Control Panel. 8. Double-click Drivers. 9. Verify that [MCI] Sound is in the list of installed drivers. If it is not present, follow these steps to install it: a. Click Add b. Click [MCI] Sound, and then click OK. c. Follow the directions on the screen to finish installing [MCI] Sound. d. Click Close. 10. In Control Panel, double-click Sound Mapper. NOTE: If this is missing from your Control Panel, then the Compressed Audio Manager (MSACM) is not properly installed. For instructions about how to install MSACM, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: Q121132 MSACM 2.0: Compressed Audio Will Not Play 11. In the list of drivers, click Microsoft GSM 6.10 Audio Codec, and then click Configure. 12. Click Auto-Config, and then click OK. NOTE: If you receive an error message when you click Auto-Config, follow the instructions in the More Information section to remove and reinstall the Microsoft GSM 6.10 Audio Codec. 13. Click Priority, click the Disable Driver check box to clear it, click OK, and then click OK again. 14. Close Control Panel. MORE INFORMATION ================ Installing Wave Audio Device in Windows 98 ------------------------------------------ To install Wave Audio Device (Media Control) in Windows 98, follow these steps: 1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel. 2. Double-click Add New Hardware, click Next, and then click Next again. 3. When you are prompted to let Windows search for new hardware, click No, and then click Next. 4. Click Sound, Video And Game Controllers, and then click Next. 5. Under Manufacturers, click Microsoft MCI. 6. Under Models, click Wave Audio Device (Media Control). 7. Click Next, and then click Finish. 8. Follow the instructions on the screen to finish installing the Wave Audio Device (Media Control). Installing Wave Audio Device in Windows 95 ------------------------------------------ To install Wave Audio Device (Media Control) in Windows 95, follow these steps: 1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel. 2. Double-click Add New Hardware, and then click Next. 3. When you are prompted to let Windows search for new hardware, click No, and then click Next. 4. Click Sound, Video And Game Controllers, and then click Next. 5. Removing and Reinstalling GSM 6.10 Codec in Windows 3.1x -------------------------------------------------------- To remove and reinstall the Microsoft GSM 6.10 Audio Codec on a Windows 3.1x-based computer, follow these steps: 1. Exit Windows. 2. At the command prompt, type the following line, and then press ENTER: cd\windows\system 3. At the command prompt, type the following line, and then press ENTER: del msgsm610.acm 4. At the command prompt, type "win" (without the quotation marks), and then press ENTER. 5. In the Main group in Program Manager, double-click File Manager. 6. On the File menu, click Search. 7. In the Search For box, type "*.stf" (without the quotation marks). 8. In the Start From box, type ":\" (without the quotation marks), where is the letter of the hard disk on which your multimedia program is installed. 9. Click the Search All Subdirectories check box to select it, and then click OK. 10. In the Search Results windows, delete the .stf file located in the folder in which your multimedia program is installed. 11. Quit File Manager. 12. To reinstall the Microsoft GMS 6.10 Audio Codec, run the installation program for your multimedia program and follow the instructions on the screen.
